Why is it a route to legal citizenship?
The program awards up to 55,000 visas or green cards per year, granting beneficiaries one year of permanent residence in the United States. Subsequently, these people have a good chance of obtaining US citizenship.
When will registration start?
Applications will be open from Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at 12:00 p.m. to Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at 12:00 p.m.
Applicants can apply on the website of the State Council.
How does this work?
People from countries with low immigration rates are considered for the visa lottery: According to documents shared by the State Department, more than 50,000 citizens of countries that left the US in the last five years did not qualify.
While most winners live outside of the United States, there are also some winners who live in the United States and have other types of visas.
Which countries are not eligible?
Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China (including Hong Kong Special Administrative Region), Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Republic of Korea (South Korea), United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland), and its dependencies Venezuela Vietnam
On the other hand, Macau and Taiwan are eligible.
What requirements have to comply?
Candidates must have completed at least a high school education or its equivalent and have completed two years of work experience in the last five years in an occupation that requires at least two years of training or experience. This will be determined by the State Department database.
